Yes! There are several location that can be mod to make it "softer", I have tried that but the "resolving power" will be decreased and the sound will become not "clear" as before. So I switch back.

I never try this myself but I have visit the site before and here is my comment after reading the texts and photoes on their site.
1) The Power supply section (317/337) is better than the internal dac in your CDP but there are lots more good power supply in the market which is better than (317/337), if you want to mod it, use (1085/1033) to replace them.
2) I think the DAC chip and opamp used are not as good as your CDP.
3) The Balanced out is not a real balance out, it just used OPAMP to convert unbalanced out (RCA) to Balanced out, not used.

The sound of dac19 is a bit cool and dac17 is warm and "musical"!
In addition, the DAC19 don't have blanced out and DAC17 have REAL balanced out!

No need, the original deisgn is already very good.
If you really want to mod it, since each DAC17 is build-to-order, just tell them how you want to mod it and they can do it for you.
If they don't have the component, you can mail those components to them. |

Just read the specification on the net on A8s.
Yes! It is PCM1732 + 2 x 604 + 2 x 5532
For PCM1732 itself, it is a good DAC chip.
However, without the circuit diagram, it is not easy to judge the performance of the I/V stage using 2 x 604 + 2 x 5532
But from the photo of A8s, the weakness is the power supply part. It is a just single small size transformer with simple IC power regulator.
1) Separate transformer should be used for digital and analog circuit.
2) a better power supply circuit should be used.
If you don't want to buy an external DAC and want to mod the CDP only, my advice is
1) change the clock to an TCXO
2) upgrade the power supply

It all depends on the DAC design in your CDP, mainly which model of your DAC chip.
For the I/V Stage after the DAC chip, in normal design is OPAMP, upgrade the opamp and modify the sound, but if the DAC chip is not very good. The impovement is not much.
One advantage of DAC17 & DAC19 is that they replace the OPAMPs with clone Marantz "HDAM" circuit. (So NO opamp!). It can provide more dynamic output.
In many cases, an enternal DAC can provide better sound cause there will be no limitation of space that will limit the type of power supply and size of the transformer used. (where the power supply can affect the sound a lot)

The only difference is the transformer used (19U use C-transformer and 19R use R-transformer).
In addition, please note that my own DIY DAC19 is differet with the standrad DAC19, I use a extra stage of power supply (so in total two stages) and I upgrade some 0.1u cap to Solen.
However, if you like the one I did, you can ask them to do the same but it will cost more (about RMB 800 extra). |

DAC17 - Overall sound is better.
DAC1 - I never try so I don't know.

牌子貨? I don't know which one you want to buy and what is the price range.
For 麗特dac, within the same price range, I think audio-gd is better.

Please note that DAC17 or DAC19 is just designed for CD only. (16 bits 44.1 kHz)
Not for DVD-A or SACD.
However, it should be enough if your source is mainly CD. |

Beside DAC19 that I built myself,
I also got a DAC17 成品機 from audio-gd. The sound is better my own DAC19.
The workmanship of the PCB inside is good but the outlook of the case is not quite good. |

I find your DAC19 is use ti pcm1704 chips, I also want to DIY one
dac for my old cd player.
So, could you kindly send me a schematic for reference?
Actually, I already complete the layout and assembly, but I find the
high frequency has been cut, thus I want to know the low pass filter
topology of other design. I don't know it's pcm1704 characteristic or the other reason.
Hope you could give a help.

I have tested DAC19 last night.
冇用交連電容, DC in analog out is about 25mV (at PCM1704U-K DAC out is 0.8mV)
In my opinion, the bass and the "dynamic" is better than my AW-D2.
More details can be heard.
At first, I just plan to test it for a few mins but at this end, I listen it for nearly two hours (until the battery in my PPA headphone dead).
