You need to get a microcoltroller system to at least ask the CD-ROM to spin. Please check out this website as they have lots of information on this subject:

Better yet, there are web stores that sells CD-ROM based controller as CD Players. |

I am thinking of using an old CD-ROM drive of PC and connect it to a DAC to build my own cd player. But don't know how to convert the IDE plug of CD-ROM to the DAC. Any idea? Did you know anybody did this before? Where to obtain more info on this? |

Since I will turn on the equipment in sequence (from source to output),
CD -> DAC -> Pre-Amp -> Power Amp
So I never have this problem. |

But,
PCM1794 - about $200 each -> 200 x 4 = 800
SRC4192 - about $150 each
OPA627 - about $120 each --> 120 x 14 = 1680
Only these ICs will costs about 2.7k.
If I used good quality e-cap and other components. 
In addition, the original 317/337 power supply will need to be upgraded.

Is there a top model? I don't know.?
I just use Canare L5-CFB cable which was designed for SDI signal (where the bandwidth is much higher than SPDIF singal).
And I am happy with it. |

For digital cable, there is some difference, some test reported that the jitter in BNC connector is low than RCA and optical. |

What player/transport are you using with DAC17/19 ? In fact, I am now using Marantz 14 v2 and I want to improve the CD performance by adding an DAC.
Although people said the CD portion of SA14 is weaker than SACD part, I don't have any complaint on it. I wonder addinng DAC17 or 19 will improve it or not. |
