loser hing,
---------------
I agree.
I suspect, plus the fact that PM do not recommend using 2.5", that the USB port of MTV does not supply enough power like other "normal" USB port.
Some USB case need more power, some need less. You can experiement with different HD case and some may work. |

Continue to the talk of Buffalo DS.
I am using Bufflao DS 640G/EXT2.
I have tried to reset the MTV3000 to factory default, but no use. the blinking green light still occurs.
I found out that the color of the harddisk access light is determined EACH TIME the DS power up (= MTV3000 goes on from standby mode), until it goes to standby mode again.
e.g. i turn on the MTV3000. if the color of the harddisk access light is red while blinking when i perform recording or playback. It will stay red until I turn off the MTV3000. If it is green, it will stay green until I turn off the MTV3000 and all the programmes recorded during that periiod will be lag.
It is easy to test. try this procdeure:
1. turn on MTV3000,
2. press the record button,
3. have a look on the color of the harddisk access light while it is blinking,
4. if it is red, stop the recording and turn off the MTV3000.
5. try step 1 again until you see the blinking light is green.
6. while the green light is blinking (means you are doing recording, try to playback one of your recorded programme, your MTV3000 will hang.
For my case, the green light will show up after 2-3 tests.

Hi Celsius,
I also could not find any documentation in the manual nor on Buffalo Technology's website. Operation of the indicator lights I stated is just my observation. You can find out easily whether the hdd is spinning - just feel it by touching the enclosure case. Moreover, audible sound comes out from the enclosure when there are read/write activities. |

Li On,

Hi celsius,
About the Buffalo Drive Station indicator lights, I think they operate in the following manner:
upper green light off + lower red light steady on - DS is in standby mode awaiting to be woken up by the STB
upper green light on + lower red light off - DS is in operation with no read/write activities
upper green light on + lower red light blinking on - DS is in operation with read write activities
--------------------------
Thank you.
I assumed that is the case from experience but I just could not find any documentation to support it. |

After boot the PartedMagic. There are 8 icons on the right buttom.
Please click the most left icon on the right buttom (not those empty icons on left bottom coner), it is a the hard disk icon (it looks like a XBox).
When you point to this icon it will show "GParted Ghome Partition Editor".
After you double click this icon, a window show up on the left up coner and shwong meaasge "scanning all devices".
After that you may find /dev/hda and /dev/sda.
dev = devices, hda = internal hard disk, sda = external hard disk.
On right side of the icon commond bar of that window, there are up and down arrows ↑↓, click it to change to the connected external hard disk.
The horizonal bar below will show the ???G of your external hard disk.
Right click this bar to pleace resize command and right click this bar to place format command. Double click the √ commond button to Apply All Operation.
I only test the 640G WD Internal Hard Disk, WD6400AAKS with a external hard disk box.
I do not own Buffalo DS 640G or WD My Book 640G. In comparing this tow I do not know which one is better.
I only own Buffalo DS 500G use EXT2 format and it is good.
It is about time for us to enjoy TV programme.
Have I nice day.

hi Jwrong,
I try to answer your question.
you should copy all files under two directories: tv and ts, and the file tv.db to the new hard disk, then you can watch your old tv programs.
john

Hi john hing,
Thx for your advice, I copied those files in ts & tv directory from the USB memory stick to HDD and I can play those file from the HDD.

Hi ML & All,
My case is similar to you. I use My Book 500g for 1 day without any formatting. No serious problem (instant recording, timer recording & playback), the only thing is replay during recording, a litter stutter happen especially fast forward & backward). Finally, I listen to LI ON’s advice, format My Book to EXT2 by MTV3000 and everything OK. Now, I’m very very happy with MTV3000 + My Book. Thank you PM, LI ON & Peter. The excellent recording function is really a gift, a FREE GIFT to me. I have 3 HD DVD recorders it cost me about $7500 + $5900 + $4000 years ago. The picture quality absolutely can’t compare with MTV3000 ($2680 on early January). In addition, I can easily select/manage the sound track & subtitle during playback and more easy for me to make a back up for my favourite TV progam......I love it...........
And MTV5000 is my next target. No matter the price of MTV5000 = 2 MTV3000, I think MTV5000 will be more stable & the chips is better than MTV3000 …………

Hi Peter
Thnaks for yopur help.
I have already burnt the disc and boot up using the parted Magic CD, but don't know what to do next then, I am new to Linux. Shame.
However, I am still hesitiating whether start using the buffalo or not. because I bought it recently, never used, I may be able to replace it with a WD in the shop.
Can some C-hing also using new buffalo 640g successfully share their experience |

Will MTV provide a tool
which we may able to consolidate the ts file from 2 hdd into 1?
Because sometimes I may switch the hdd for recording
I think it will be great if there is a tool to manipulate the recorded files |

My Bufallo 640G/ext3 red light stays ON all the time when MTV goes to standby.
It is working OK though, waking to record ad goes back to red light when standby after scheduled recording.
I tried to find out what the red light means but could not find anything. The red light is supposed to be disk access so it is worrying when it stays on all the time.
I connected it to Viewsonic before, when Viewsonic goes to standby, all light go off. When Viewsonic wakes up for scheduled recording Bufallo is powered on woth green light. Only when it is recording or playback the red light blinks. I think it behaves what it should be.
But Bufallo seems to be working OK. Still, the red light is puzzling. |

Added: How to access (read/write) MTV3000 Formatted (EXT2 Format) USB harddrive in Windows PC? On the PC, please install a EXT2 driver for Windows, such as http://www.fs-driver.org/
Tomorrow (Friday), hopefully, We will try to release a firmware update for the MTV3000 with USB harddrive recording function, for user to have fun with recording over the weekend! This firmware will have some software bugs and may not function 100% perfect. Please treat it as a "beta" release! After we collect feedback from users, we will release a update version ASAP.
With the recording firmware, it can directly record to a FAT32 harddrive, or it can "format" a USB drive in EXT2 format up to 500G.
We suggest to use a USB harddrive with "auto Power On/Off" function. Some brand name USB harddrives we tested support the auto On/Off function, such as the Buffalo DriveStation, WD (Western Digital) My Book series, and Seagate FreeAgent series. If the USB harddrive support auto On/Off, then the USB harddrive should auto trun off when the MTV3000 finished recording and auto standby, and auto power on when the MTV3000 auto wake up when recording starts.
Generally we recommand a 3.5" USB harddrive with standalone power supply to use on the MTV3000. We also tested a few 2.5" USB harddrive size from 80G to 320G. Those 2.5" USB harddrives also work with the MTV3000 recording, with a "1 USB (harddrive) to 2 USB (MTV3000) cable" for the MTV3000 to supply enough power to the 2.5" USB harddrive. But we can NOT make sure all 2.5" harddrive can work on the MTV3000.
Please post any question about the upcoming MTV3000 recording firmware here! Thanks in advance.
regards,
Li On
