I'm so lucky & happy with MTV3000 + WD My Book 500G (EXT2 formated by MTV3000). Not only perfect match in appearance, but also their excellent performance. I already made more than 30 recordings since last Friday (including instant recording & timer recording). All recordings are successful & all playback are smooth & excellent in quality.
In conclusion, I'm very happy & satisfy with MTV3000's picture quality & permance even with the Beta Firmware. I can imagine the future firmware will be much more perfect. And I planned to buy MTV5000 in near future.
Thank you PM, especially Li On & PeterLie.....Great job |

Of course, Buffalo is only one of example. I don't have the full picture so only take this as example. BTW, WD Mybook is all OK with EXT2 format, correct me if wrong |

Are you saying all those who have play back problems use Bufallo?
I do not think so. Many use other combinations of HD and case. |

Hi GKH luk hing,
I do think you are expert too!
But I don't think it's a program bug in PMS's firmware. If it's the case, it will apply on all HD not just Buffalo. So we classify it as compatiblity issue between STB and Buffalo. |

I am not a software programmer, however I understand that a bug in the program may not be invoked every time the program is run. It may only cause problems after the program has performed certain tasks. Thus a reboot which clears out the memory sometimes may solve the problem temporarily. Bugs like infinite loops and memory leaks appear to fall into this category. Experts out there please correct me if I am wrong. |

Status update:
Buffalo compatibility: after many experiments our R&D team has been able to reproduce the playback jitter problem under specific circumstances and only occasionally. It is not consistent therefore not all Buffalo users see this problem. Our team is hard at work on this problem.
1080p stutter: we are still working with Sigma Designs to improve this situation. To recap the problem, it only happened because TVB has recently changed its own encoding scheme (and lowered the bit rate, as Li On has said before.)

So if there is such a bug, what makes the bug to play ok sometimes and not ok the other time? |

I agree.
As some people report that file some times play OK and sometimes not, so the recording files are OK.
It is a play back issue. |

I doubt very much the stuttering playback of recorded programs on Buffalo Drive Stations (formatted by MTV3000 in Ext2 file system) was a compatibility issue between the STB and the HDD.
As a matter of fact, I purchased my Buffalo Drive Station on 27 Jun after reading Li On's message that it is one of those external HDDs PM has tested. Moreover, I have checked and found out that the HDD inside the Buffalo DS is a Western Digital SATA one. Since the Buffalo DS is just a simple enclosure with an industry standard SATA to USB interface (there is no firmware to be updated), its performance should be similar to Western Digital's own external HDD.
The playback stuttering issue a lot of us has experienced is quite likely a playback bug of the Beta firmware that PM has to sort out. |

I used MTV3000 with WD MyBook 500G (Essential series) to record 10+ programs (both instant & timer record) during the weekend. None of them has problem and can playback smoothly
PS. I used the MTV3000 to format the harddisk directly to EXT2 before using it. |

Hi Li On,
I Have BIG problem after update the NEW firmware about the RECORDING feature.
1. It playback HD video unstable.
2. MTV 3000 often hang, doesn't display on panel and control and then MUST be switch off the Main Power. After 5 mins later to reset.
3. Some pre-record prog can't record by EPG.
4. Sometime display NO SIGNAL on screen, MUST be reset.
I really know the how to fix it.
My hargdisk WD My Book( 500Gb new ones).
Harddisk format is FAT32 from original setting. |

Seems the root cause is the compatibilty between MTV and the ext HD.
Most stable combination is 80GB or above 2.5" HD with cheap cheap box, correct me if wrong, thx |

The recorded file is *ts, nothing can be done about that.
Is it too much trouble just to change the extension yourself?
--
Yes it it too much trouble. I need to use PC to rename first instead of directly plug to PS3 for viewing.
Why you say nothing can be done about that? I am asking the developer to change, not you. I know you can't, but not MTV office. |

Added: How to access (read/write) MTV3000 Formatted (EXT2 Format) USB harddrive in Windows PC? On the PC, please install a EXT2 driver for Windows, such as http://www.fs-driver.org/
Tomorrow (Friday), hopefully, We will try to release a firmware update for the MTV3000 with USB harddrive recording function, for user to have fun with recording over the weekend! This firmware will have some software bugs and may not function 100% perfect. Please treat it as a "beta" release! After we collect feedback from users, we will release a update version ASAP.
With the recording firmware, it can directly record to a FAT32 harddrive, or it can "format" a USB drive in EXT2 format up to 500G.
We suggest to use a USB harddrive with "auto Power On/Off" function. Some brand name USB harddrives we tested support the auto On/Off function, such as the Buffalo DriveStation, WD (Western Digital) My Book series, and Seagate FreeAgent series. If the USB harddrive support auto On/Off, then the USB harddrive should auto trun off when the MTV3000 finished recording and auto standby, and auto power on when the MTV3000 auto wake up when recording starts.
Generally we recommand a 3.5" USB harddrive with standalone power supply to use on the MTV3000. We also tested a few 2.5" USB harddrive size from 80G to 320G. Those 2.5" USB harddrives also work with the MTV3000 recording, with a "1 USB (harddrive) to 2 USB (MTV3000) cable" for the MTV3000 to supply enough power to the 2.5" USB harddrive. But we can NOT make sure all 2.5" harddrive can work on the MTV3000.
Please post any question about the upcoming MTV3000 recording firmware here! Thanks in advance.
regards,
Li On
