Sman,

even not fragmented. For FAT32, it has to update the File Allocation Table. For EXT2/EXT3, it has to update super block, and journal(for EXT3).

David,

Of course,if the HD is fragmented, seq r/w can't be performed.

Seq r/w rate is a figure to showoff the HD power in ideal environment. Definitely, it doesn't mean you always get that performance in practice

Firstly.Thanks ... ¯«µÇ,PeterLie & Li on ,
ON 28-6 midnight....I try to follow all (change to 24 hour display)and then format 3.5 Maxtor Basics 500GB again...But only can format it,,,
Still not working!!!
Then I power off (STB & HDD the power supply...and sleeping.,.,,,
On 29-6 morning,,,,I try agian,,,,,It can working all recording.....
Now I have three STB...Mtv 3000 & eight & olevia...... for recording.....
I just use Mtv 3000 only 2 days for recording....It is more stable then the others.
..Only the timeshift ( Eight,,,this fuction always hang)
Mtv 3000 has a little bug now.....I think wiil no problem in the future update firmware!!
When I use HDMI output to onkyo 905 to see~~~ LOST~~DD 5.1 are Very ,,,Very,,,,MORE...MORE... Better then other STB(eight & olevia only can use other Digtal output, not HDMI)
If possible......I hope Magic can sell the HDD only with the SAME BOX face Magic 3000...
If can do that. It may be a good look.
.Same the pre-amp(MTV 3000) & power amp(MTV HDD)..
..Then must be fix alll bug,,,and must be support all...
Mtv 5000...320g & 500g~~~~Mtv 3000...... Mtv HDD.....That;s Great !!

USB §Ö©w ¤º¸m IDE HDD §Ö¡H·|²¿¶Ü¡H

If in burst mode,r/w from cache, the theoretical value of interface speed are;

USB2.0; 480Mbit/s
UDMA100; 800Mbit/s

Of course it's IDE la, but the bottleneck is always on HD itself. In sequencial r/w, 7200 rpm HD max throughput is around 400Mbit/s.

As Li ON said, MTV HD recording bit rate require 13-16Mbit/s. Even 5400rpm HD can afford without lag.

So cheap cheap hdd is enough already

victorfk: to be precise, some USB HDD enclosures can spin up and spin down the HDD when necessary. If they come up with their own power supply, they should not be completely powered off, otherwise they cannot spin up the HDD as necessary. This is already better than most 3.5" USB HDD enclosures, which cannot automatically spin down HDD at all, even if MagicTV sends the HD spindown command to them, because most of such USB 3.5" HDD enclosures do not correctly implement the HD spindown command. (2.5" HDD enclosure is a different story because it usually does not come with its own power, but to draw power from MagicTV USB, which will cut power when standby.)

DivX: Yes, it is critical to standby the MagicTV before pulling out USB devices.

Midas: As far as digital TV recording is concerned, the Pixel Magic position is that internal HDD will always be more stable, efficient and convenient than external USB recording solutions. That is why we launched MagicTV 5000. Its internal HDD is a special model that is quieter and consumes less power than normal PC HDD. Plus it has Silicon Image 9134 for HDMI 1.3 output.

Added: How to access (read/write) MTV3000 Formatted (EXT2 Format) USB harddrive in Windows PC? On the PC, please install a EXT2 driver for Windows, such as http://www.fs-driver.org/

Tomorrow (Friday), hopefully, We will try to release a firmware update for the MTV3000 with USB harddrive recording function, for user to have fun with recording over the weekend! This firmware will have some software bugs and may not function 100% perfect. Please treat it as a "beta" release! After we collect feedback from users, we will release a update version ASAP.

With the recording firmware, it can directly record to a FAT32 harddrive, or it can "format" a USB drive in EXT2 format up to 500G.

We suggest to use a USB harddrive with "auto Power On/Off" function. Some brand name USB harddrives we tested support the auto On/Off function, such as the Buffalo DriveStation, WD (Western Digital) My Book series, and Seagate FreeAgent series. If the USB harddrive support auto On/Off, then the USB harddrive should auto trun off when the MTV3000 finished recording and auto standby, and auto power on when the MTV3000 auto wake up when recording starts.

Generally we recommand a 3.5" USB harddrive with standalone power supply to use on the MTV3000. We also tested a few 2.5" USB harddrive size from 80G to 320G. Those 2.5" USB harddrives also work with the MTV3000 recording, with a "1 USB (harddrive) to 2 USB (MTV3000) cable" for the MTV3000 to supply enough power to the 2.5" USB harddrive. But we can NOT make sure all 2.5" harddrive can work on the MTV3000.

Please post any question about the upcoming MTV3000 recording firmware here! Thanks in advance.

regards,

Li On
