davidlwong兄,
Could you be more explicit and layman understandable? The bottom line is - I want to find out if 5k's recording performance should be more superior and stable. Thanx |

"USB 2.0 speed is more than fast enough for STB recording use"
since it is USB to IDE/SATA bridge. It will always slower than direct IDE interface in MTV5k.
And indeed, file system gives more delay. All theoretical speed limit are talking about bulk and contiguous access. Only raw write is contiguous. After using any file system, writes are not always contiguous, so it will never reach theoretical limit. |

IDE is not related to USB.
There is difference between IDE and SATA. There is difference between USB 2.0 and 1.1 or other interface like 1394 or eSATA or SATA.
USB 2.0 speed is more than fast enough for STB recording use.
As you say, if the software is written efficiently, there should be no problem, whether IDE or SATA interface for the HD is used. |

Celsius,
Is IDE faster than USB? I don't know. I just consulted an IT friend. He said the transfer rate also depends on how the interface software was written. A good firmware can work 100 times better than a poor one. However, there maybe limitations and I believe the MTV guys are doing a great job. How can we get the message over to other consumers so that they can also benefit from this forum? |

Now you have mentioned it, MTV USB interface for connecting HD may be a little slow AND/OR supplying too little power so many are experiencing SPEED (writing to HD) problem.
I have used my Bufallo 640G for a day, so far I have not experienced any problem regarding to recording/play back. |

Sman兄,
You said "Those minor defects also apply on MTV5k"
But looking at the inside of MTV5k, the interface for harddisk is IDE and the interface for MTV3k is USB. Surely, the firmware is different. Therefore, those defects you guys encountering may not be the same in the two machines. And I remember LiOn said the recording function in 5k is preplanned but 3k is a new addition. They have to modify the firmware to add the new function in. That maybe the reason why they are still ironing the bugs. As of today, no 5k user reports any hardware problem in 5k. |

Not many people have both and have used it in MTV.
All should be OK if everything is NORMAL. |

I am thinking of buying Maxtor external 500G hardisk, is it compatible?
If compare with WD 500G & Buffalo 500G, which one is the best? |

Midas hing,
I'm 3k黨, so far so good if ;
1.Using EXT2 format.
2.Not greater than 500G.
3.Using 3.5" HD case with ext power source.
4.Remember the tip from LiOn.
Those minor defects also apply on MTV5k

All STB have problems one way or the other especially at the beginning.
I bought MTV only yesterday.
MTV seems to have less problem reported before which may be due to the LACK of recording function.
Most problems related to STB seem to be around recording issue.
Now MTV has recording function and we'll expect more and more problems reported and I hope (and I am confident) MTV will address the issue and solve the problem in a timely manner. |

Hi Li on hing,
I am encountering another problem is that when I use program recording function. When I playback those recordings, it cant show smoothly and the screen keeps flashing during playback. There is no such a problem with instant recording. Is it a bug? How can I record with program recording function?
Thx a lot

celsius hing,
Are u create 640G Fat32 partition and then use MTV3000 to format it to EXT2?
----------
At first, I formatted the drive in QNAP NAS to ext3.
MTV could recognise it and I formatted it again in MTV to ext2, but only 500G is useable.
It was working OK.
Then I refomatted it again in NAS to ext3, so all 640G is useable.
It seems to be working OK, of course it has only been less than 24 hours.
I did not format it to ext2 in PC because it would take 2 hours to do that. Formatting in NAS (only to ext3) took about 10 minutes.
It is strange with Bufallo auto on/off. When MTV goes to standby, Bufallo also goes to standby, but NOT OFF (I think) in that green light goes off and red light (usually indicates HD access) comes on (all the time). When MTV is turned on, Bufallo red light goes off and green light comes on.
I do not know whether this is supposed to be but I tested 2 scheduled recordings during the night and it seems to be working OK as I woke up to see that MTV is on standby and Bufallo red light is on. The 2 recordings were OK.
When Bufallo is connected to a PC, all lights goes off (so power off) when PC is switched off, and green light comes on when PC is turned on.
Any one else with a Bufallo have the same or give any comment? |

SMAN hing,
You mean the USB "auto Power On/Off" is based on the HD command? |

CS106,
It depends on HD comand set not case itself. |

Do you know this model can support USB "auto Power On/Off"?

Harddisk larger than 500GB has to be formatted by 3rd party software first before connecting to MTV3000. Pixel Magic says firmware 2.0 beta supports harddisk of any size. |

If yes, what is the final size is 640G or 500G? |

Thanks for all the feedback! Many issues should be fixed with more firmware update.
A few tips:
- we recommand to use a 3.5" harddrive with standalone power supply in EXT2 format for the most stable operation
- if you must use a 2.5" harddrive without standalone power supply, please use a "1 usb to 2 usb" cable and connect both the MTV3000 usb ports, to give the most usb power to the 2.5" harddrive
- when using a 2.5" harddrive, please use a bigger harddrive from 120G and bigger. Old and small 2.5" harddrive such as 20G or 40G actually use more power and run much slower than current bigger size 2.5" harddrive.
- to turn off the "recording", "playback" icons at the upper left corner, go to Setup->Info Format and switch off the blinking icon
- press the power/standby to make the system auto standy after the current recording
- if there is recorded program in 1 second, please play the 1 second recording from the begining, and the recording length may become normal
- recording on a FAT32 format harddrive is not stable with this firmware. We recommand to format the USB harddrive to EXT2 format, under Setup->Recording->Format External Harddrive.
- if the USB harddrive format process does not start or finish in a few minutes, please try the Format process again
- the MTV3000 format function will format a USB harddrive in EXT2 format up to 500G. It can also use a already formatted FAT32/EXT2 harddrive at any size
- many cheap and small size (1G or smaller) USB finger/thumbdrive read/write speed may be too slow for recording/playback. Please use a harddrive instead.
- if you are not sure/understand the operation or setting, please try it! Please try to use as many functions as possible and post any question/problem here
Thanks in advance.
regards,
Li On |

Added: How to access (read/write) MTV3000 Formatted (EXT2 Format) USB harddrive in Windows PC? On the PC, please install a EXT2 driver for Windows, such as http://www.fs-driver.org/
Tomorrow (Friday), hopefully, We will try to release a firmware update for the MTV3000 with USB harddrive recording function, for user to have fun with recording over the weekend! This firmware will have some software bugs and may not function 100% perfect. Please treat it as a "beta" release! After we collect feedback from users, we will release a update version ASAP.
With the recording firmware, it can directly record to a FAT32 harddrive, or it can "format" a USB drive in EXT2 format up to 500G.
We suggest to use a USB harddrive with "auto Power On/Off" function. Some brand name USB harddrives we tested support the auto On/Off function, such as the Buffalo DriveStation, WD (Western Digital) My Book series, and Seagate FreeAgent series. If the USB harddrive support auto On/Off, then the USB harddrive should auto trun off when the MTV3000 finished recording and auto standby, and auto power on when the MTV3000 auto wake up when recording starts.
Generally we recommand a 3.5" USB harddrive with standalone power supply to use on the MTV3000. We also tested a few 2.5" USB harddrive size from 80G to 320G. Those 2.5" USB harddrives also work with the MTV3000 recording, with a "1 USB (harddrive) to 2 USB (MTV3000) cable" for the MTV3000 to supply enough power to the 2.5" USB harddrive. But we can NOT make sure all 2.5" harddrive can work on the MTV3000.
Please post any question about the upcoming MTV3000 recording firmware here! Thanks in advance.
regards,
Li On
