My 3000 hang-up several times since I upgraded it to 2.0 beta. 
I have to use the power switch at the back to reboot it.
I know it is a beta firmware but I still wish PMS can fix it asap. |

Parted Magic is a bootable CD, you should put it in CD-ROM and let the machine boot from that CD. Of course, you have to set CD-ROM having higher priority than harddisk. And hit enter if you see any "press any key to boot from CD...". |

如有NAS, 可以接上NAS, 再format 成為EXT2/EXT3, 經NAS control, 話之你用MAC定PC。
我就係用QNAP, TS-109P, 將external HDD connect上NAS的usb, 你點玩都得, 檔案仲可以由PC/MAC上上落落。又唔駛裝EXT2 driver! |

Referring to your 200GB Maxtor that can only auto off but not auto on, if it is a 3.5" drive, my guess is that the USB HDD enclosure might be the culprit and it is worthwhile to try out another USB HDD enclosure.
However, if it is 2.5" drive and the USB HDD enclosure does not have its own power supply, then it's hard to say whether it's the USB enclosure problem or not enough power can be drawn from the USB port. It's also worthwhile to try out another "1 USB (harddrive) to 2 USB (MTV3000) cable" USB cable to draw power from two USB ports as Li On originally suggested. |

Added: How to access (read/write) MTV3000 Formatted (EXT2 Format) USB harddrive in Windows PC? On the PC, please install a EXT2 driver for Windows, such as http://www.fs-driver.org/
Tomorrow (Friday), hopefully, We will try to release a firmware update for the MTV3000 with USB harddrive recording function, for user to have fun with recording over the weekend!  This firmware will have some software bugs and may not function 100% perfect. Please treat it as a "beta" release!  After we collect feedback from users, we will release a update version ASAP. 
With the recording firmware, it can directly record to a FAT32 harddrive, or it can "format" a USB drive in EXT2 format up to 500G.
We suggest to use a USB harddrive with "auto Power On/Off" function. Some brand name USB harddrives we tested support the auto On/Off function, such as the Buffalo DriveStation, WD (Western Digital) My Book series, and Seagate FreeAgent series. If the USB harddrive support auto On/Off, then the USB harddrive should auto trun off when the MTV3000 finished recording and auto standby, and auto power on when the MTV3000 auto wake up when recording starts.
Generally we recommand a 3.5" USB harddrive with standalone power supply to use on the MTV3000. We also tested a few 2.5" USB harddrive size from 80G to 320G. Those 2.5" USB harddrives also work with the MTV3000 recording, with a "1 USB (harddrive) to 2 USB (MTV3000) cable" for the MTV3000 to supply enough power to the 2.5" USB harddrive. But we can NOT make sure all 2.5" harddrive can work on the MTV3000.
