Dear Bros,

Does anyone know how to re-format a EXT2 harddrive back to FAT32?

I understand that EXT2 is more stable for MTV3000 but a FAT32 harddrive can be edited by Windows based computer. I plan to cut the commercial for recorded TV program.

Thanks very much in advance.

Higo brother,

My two cents.

Did u try to use another USB cable? for some case, the poor connection or poor quality of the USB cable may cause this kinds of issue.

Dear Brothers,

I have a 200G Maxtor harddisk. It is around 3 years old. I would like to use it with MTV3000 for recording. The existing USB Box turns the harddisk off when the MTV3000 is turned into standby mode via the remote control. However, when I turn the MTV3000 is turned on via the remote control (or triggered by the pre-set EPG recording), the harddisk is still off. Accordingly, my harddisk is only capable of automatically turning off but not turning on.

My question is whether it is the problem of the harddisk or the USB Box. If it is the USB Box, I will buy a new USB Box that supports the automatic On/Off function. If it is the problem of the harddisk, I better buy a new branded/combined harddisk such as WD My Book or Seagate FreeAgent.

Thanks very much in advance.

To PM,

During the schedule recording, the msg will flash on the middle of the screen. Can we disable or minimize it and remain the "R" icon on the top left corner? In some case, I need to record for TV program for my parent and I'm watching it at real time. Such as the football match.

I know I can use the real time recording. But my experience is I want to have a timer to start and stop the recording. For example, I will go to sleep before the football match finish during the mid night.

Hi Higo,

Could you state the following;

HD model, EXT2 or FAT32, USB box brand name/model,thx

MTV 3K with Hitachi 7k200 SATA 2.5" 200GB HDD,EXT2 format, Cheap $75 MAD'zD 2.5" USB2.0 HDD Case (MD1-U2). Auto spin up/down with MTV. Record and playback no problem

Just want to share my experience in using a 80G (Hitachi) 2.5" external harddrive together with Y-shaped USB cable for recording:

1. On average, it takes about 100M for each minute of HD recording. Accordingly, it "eats" 6G of harddisk for every hour of HD recording.

2. For instant recording, no problem for 2.5" harddisk.

3. In respect of EPG recording, it could be unstable at time when using the 2.5" harddisk. For an hour of HD TV program, the harddisk somertimes only recorded 1.5G of data (as compare to the normal 6G). Obviously, the playback will jitter a lot because of insufficiency of data in the first place.

4. Even if you have successfully recorded a 6G per hour HD TV program on the 2.5" harddisk, the playback is not guaranteed to be successful every time. For example, I can watch the playback a recorded HD TV program in the morning without any problem. However, when I watched the very same recorded program at night, the playback is 勁" 窒. I do not know it is the problem of the MTV3000 or the harddisk. I rather suspect it is the harddisk or the cheap cheap (HK$70) harddisk controller case.

5. Personally, I very much like the idea of using a 2.5" harddisk as the recording medium because it is so neat (i.e. without extra power supply) and convenient (i.e. can be easily detached to the laptop for further editing). However, it proves to be quite "unstable". Can anyone who is currently using a 2.5" harddisk share their experience and findings?

我用緊兩年前的drivestation, 320G, so far so good.

今晚買咗 Buffalo Drive Stations 320GB
即插即用冇問題,不過幾熱.....之前試用512MB手指
用MTV3000 format都係勁窒勁爆格
喺電腦重新format之後就好順
有勁窒勁爆格既師兄會唔會都係用MTV3000 format?

Added: How to access (read/write) MTV3000 Formatted (EXT2 Format) USB harddrive in Windows PC? On the PC, please install a EXT2 driver for Windows, such as http://www.fs-driver.org/

Tomorrow (Friday), hopefully, We will try to release a firmware update for the MTV3000 with USB harddrive recording function, for user to have fun with recording over the weekend! This firmware will have some software bugs and may not function 100% perfect. Please treat it as a "beta" release! After we collect feedback from users, we will release a update version ASAP.

With the recording firmware, it can directly record to a FAT32 harddrive, or it can "format" a USB drive in EXT2 format up to 500G.

We suggest to use a USB harddrive with "auto Power On/Off" function. Some brand name USB harddrives we tested support the auto On/Off function, such as the Buffalo DriveStation, WD (Western Digital) My Book series, and Seagate FreeAgent series. If the USB harddrive support auto On/Off, then the USB harddrive should auto trun off when the MTV3000 finished recording and auto standby, and auto power on when the MTV3000 auto wake up when recording starts.

Generally we recommand a 3.5" USB harddrive with standalone power supply to use on the MTV3000. We also tested a few 2.5" USB harddrive size from 80G to 320G. Those 2.5" USB harddrives also work with the MTV3000 recording, with a "1 USB (harddrive) to 2 USB (MTV3000) cable" for the MTV3000 to supply enough power to the 2.5" USB harddrive. But we can NOT make sure all 2.5" harddrive can work on the MTV3000.

Please post any question about the upcoming MTV3000 recording firmware here! Thanks in advance.

regards,

Li On
