I just tried a non-brand name ($120) external HDD box with a segate 250G drive and they have been working without problems. When the STB is in standby mode, it turns off the HDD as well. I do notice that when the STB started recording from standby, the first 10 secs. or so was missing. I guess that was caused by the spin up of the HDD. Anyway, I am surprised that people using brand name ext HDD had problems.
Another thing I noticed was that, the HDD must be in prime condition. I tried an HDD which had occasional write problem with the computer and it seemed to have more problems with the MTV3000 (took a long time to recognize, disk errors etc.). Possibly, the MTV3000 is more picky about the HDD being connected. |

I have been using Western Digital MyBook 1TB Essential Edition since the MTV300's firmware for receording was introduced. It was formatted as ext2, never have a a problem of auto on/off and all timer recordings are done without any problem. |

唔係下話? 我昨日先買一隻新WD MyBook 3.5" Home Edition 1TB, 我未有時間轉做 ext3, 現在用跟機default fat32, 今晚要試清楚有無各C兄出現的問題。

我都是用 WD My book Home版 ,
都是在mtv3000 stand-by mode 時, 明明睇住 WD My book 轉 睡眠狀態,
但會,即時無啦啦又會自己著返去左待機狀態(即每四秒閃一閃),
當用remote 再開 mtv3000 時, 係認唔到 hd , hd還是在待機狀態(即每四秒閃一閃),
然後要把 hd 電源完全關閉再開hd ,mtv3000 才認到.
以上平均發生機會為40% 左右!!!!
我現在的解決方法是,長開 mtv300不關機, 防止認唔到hd而錄影失敗!!! |

suggest MTV3000 can add functions like:
use dot to dot output of channel signals (like J2 and Jade output 720p) instead of all fix to 1080p
or allow user to preserve setting base on various channels
as I found that, output 1080p of JD picture quality is not as good as 720p |

任 MTV3000在待機狀態 及 WD My book 連上電 ，當然這時WD My book 是會被auto power off，燈是完全熄
下次再開MTV3000便會再認回 WD My book 沒有問題
即MTV3000及WD My book 兩個都不要完全斷電

任由 MTV3000 在待機狀態 及 WD My book 在 睡眠狀態(即完全冇燈著)
但買左套野返黎一個星期, 發生過三次呢個問題, 我就好奇怪係咪 MTV3000 同 Home版 唔夾?
明明睇住 WD My book 在 睡眠狀態(即完全冇燈著),
唔知幾時無啦啦又會自己著返去左待機狀態(即每四秒閃一閃) (不是走馬燈)
就係咁先奇!?
希望多D用 WD Mybook 既朋友發表下~

500 * 1000 / 1024 = 488GB；（而家廠家出廠通常1GB = 1000MB，實際電腦1GB = 1024MB）
所以到電腦計時就少左
465GB似乎少左d，唔足數，你係咪用MTV3000 format（EXT2），如果唔係就試試
我部 buffalo 都係顯示 466GB，多你1GB，哈哈，錄多你10分鐘高清節目 |

我終於成功format到隻Maxtor Basics 750GB HD啦...最後係要用Partition Magic format ext2 才可以用到全隻750GB HD (可用約675GB)都唔見左70GB.但都好過之前只有488GB.我隻Maxtor都應該會有待機狀態、佢會慢慢閃燈，如果我按錄影、部機會好慢幾秒先開始錄，但都一樣會錄，如果佢無閃燈它就會一按就馬上錄影。如果按power熄機，隻HD會在幾秒內power-off。 |

I am using WD my book 500G Home version
According to maual,
I tried to plug mybook to computer, there is no problem,
When computer go to sleep mode, WD my book 每四秒閃一閃
It can weak up again.
When I turn off the computer, WD my book led totally off.
after re-start the computer, the WD my book weak up again
WD my book 每四秒閃一閃是進入standyby mode
MAy be WD Essential Vesion without this problem, only WD my book Home version problem |

都是這樣
試過換USB線
以為機過熱
外置加風扇吹MTV3000及WD My book
都唔得
你是不是每次關機都會關wall socket大制 (或拖板制)
你試試
當 MTV3000 關了機(待機狀態),WD My book 會自己著返去佢自己的待機狀態(即閃下閃下),
再開啟 MTV3000 時, 畫面會出現"發現 USB 硬碟",
但實際係冇連到 WD My book 的, 因個硬碟還在 待機狀態(即閃下閃下),
我要用搖控按 設定 > 重新啟動 MTV3000 ,
先可以真正換醒 WD My book, 進入正常狀態,
你做完以上後當再power off MTV3000時，不要關wall socket大制 (或拖板制)
任 MTV3000在待機狀態 及 WD My book 連上電 ，當然這時WD My book 是會被auto power off，燈是完全熄
下次再開MTV3000便會再認回 WD My book 沒有問題
即MTV3000及WD My book 兩個都不要完全斷電
我現在就是這樣解决這種問題

我發覺部機update左做2.03 bate之後,一邊錄影一邊看野的時候,好容易會hang機,已經試過幾次了,要熄機再開先得!!

Added: How to access (read/write) MTV3000 Formatted (EXT2 Format) USB harddrive in Windows PC? On the PC, please install a EXT2 driver for Windows, such as http://www.fs-driver.org/
Tomorrow (Friday), hopefully, We will try to release a firmware update for the MTV3000 with USB harddrive recording function, for user to have fun with recording over the weekend!  This firmware will have some software bugs and may not function 100% perfect. Please treat it as a "beta" release!  After we collect feedback from users, we will release a update version ASAP.
With the recording firmware, it can directly record to a FAT32 harddrive, or it can "format" a USB drive in EXT2 format up to 500G.
We suggest to use a USB harddrive with "auto Power On/Off" function. Some brand name USB harddrives we tested support the auto On/Off function, such as the Buffalo DriveStation, WD (Western Digital) My Book series, and Seagate FreeAgent series. If the USB harddrive support auto On/Off, then the USB harddrive should auto trun off when the MTV3000 finished recording and auto standby, and auto power on when the MTV3000 auto wake up when recording starts.
Generally we recommand a 3.5" USB harddrive with standalone power supply to use on the MTV3000. We also tested a few 2.5" USB harddrive size from 80G to 320G. Those 2.5" USB harddrives also work with the MTV3000 recording, with a "1 USB (harddrive) to 2 USB (MTV3000) cable" for the MTV3000 to supply enough power to the 2.5" USB harddrive. But we can NOT make sure all 2.5" harddrive can work on the MTV3000.
