Ferrarian兄,我都係建議你買Nikon 50mm F1.8 囉!我自已F1.8同F1.4兩支鏡

I agreed with Jess that the optical difference may not be large
between f1.7 and f1.4. The usage coverage may be the same. Of
course, the f1.7 is far more lighter. The opportunity cost to a
product is different between cases.
In catering your need to take portraits, I recommend the Nikon AF
85mm f1.8. Please compare the depth of field meter on the lens
barrel and you will find the reason of a portrait lens should fall
85mm to 120mm/135mm/180mm. The bokeh will be much better if you hire
a real portrait lens rather than a so-called portrait lens (50mm).
For a 85mm, after cropping effect on D70, becomes around 120mm. It
is suitable for 'Head and Shoulder' pictures. The perspective
control of this lens will be different from a 50mm.
Hope you don't mind for diverting you to the other direction. Just
share. For my Nikon system, I do not use neither 50mm nor 85mm for
taking portraits. I use the AFS VR 70-200mm for portraits. Most
often, I will use my Minolta 80-200mm f2.8 which I like more than the
Nikon AFS VR.
Regarding Zeiss, I have only came across with Hasselblad and Contax.
I used a vintage Zeiss standard lens for Hasse before. I could not
stand the incovenience of focusing process and framing. Moreover,
the number of photos per roll of film hindered the interest of
continuance. I gave up the Hassel. The photo outcome by Hassel
partnered with Zeiss lens was terrific. Colour rendition is natural,
low contrast and skin tone is thick. These result only apply to old
vintage Hassel Zeiss lens with very thin coating.
For playing with Contax was only to satisfy my mystery to Zeiss. In
my experience with 25mm, 28mm, 28-85mm and 40-80mm, I found that the
colour saturation of Zeiss (modern) was too exciting for me. The
colour rendition was boosted to more brilliant than the objects. The
whole Contax system was deployed by a huge monetary loss.
I prefer more natural colour rendition, such as Leitz, Minolta,
Rollei, Voigtlander (oldies) and Angenieux.
However, I must add that the talent and experience of making glasses
by Zeiss is higher and older than other brands I have mentioned.
This info can be proven by many articles currently.

ths birds1010 hing, ur explanation is so detail, and the comparison
is very logical.
i'm very new to photography, therefore i know very little.
i really appreciate ur patience and enthusiasm to share ur
experience with newbees like me.
i take human portraits most. as u have said, i use it as a portrait
lens. Therefore, skin colour is my first concern.
large aperture also helps me to take photo in dim light (as i dun
know how to use flash properly)
have u come across any zeiss lens? |

I would buy the first version of AF Nikkor 50mm f1.7. If you have
the chance to check with different versions, you will find that the
glasses of the oldest version are much more better than the latter.
It is not necessary to be proven by pictures. It can be recognised
by eyeball checking.
In my personal opinion, I would prefer to take a 50mm f1.4 for
whatever brand. I was told by some senior amateurs that every camera
manufacturing company will put most efforts on the f1.4 standard lens
because it is a STANDARD lens reflecting their standard. The
material being used for f1.4 is different from the f1.7.
Alternatively, the same applies on the f1.2 and f1.4.
Uptill now, I think most of the marketing standard lenses were
designed mainly for film photo. Therefore, I would prefer to choose
a f1.4 because of it suits both film and digital photos, why not pay
more serious on it.
For the optical quality of smaller aperture is better than wider
aperture, I only have came across by Alpa. I don't think it can be
construed as a precedent because the design of the two lenses were
different.
Leica 50mm f2 (R lens) is the standard lens I like most which I sold
mine for only HKD 1,300 several years ago. I missed this lens very
much. I deeply regretted for selling it because I have chosen to
keep the Leica 60mm f2.8 Macro which have been along with me from the
first day I owned Leica R system.
I am having a M Leica 50mm f2 (rigid), AF Minolta 50mm f1.4 and
Minolta MC Rokkor 58mm f1.2. They rank high position of me.
We need to choose 50mm lens seriously because it is widely accepted
that the perspective angle of view are most comfortable. Please
visit any of the Delifrance (cafe) and see the photos on their wall.
Most were taken by standard lens.
50mm lens being used on digital has turned to another issue for being
a portrait lens. The designed of depth-of-field was spoiled. The
soul of a 50mm lens should refers to the actual film size, do you
agree?
Nice to chat with you.

p.s. My views are based on collection and usage while it is suggested
to consider the C/P ratio which is different from persons. |

Jess
