SB-900 的GN號碼是34 標準(ISO100•m) 、GN 48 (ISO200•m) ，可支援尼康全系列數位機身，活用i-TTL調光場景模式和無線的補燈攝影等特殊功能。 SB-900作為新功能裝載配了『發光類別可更換』新選擇。在『標準配光』模式中，使用者可以選擇『均等配光』、『中央重點配光』與『背景配光』三種模式，大大地增加了運用閃光配光的彈性選擇。
另外，新閃燈還開放支援由使用者修改韌體的新功能，你可以從Web站點下載SB-900的韌體，透過同時發表的 D700之照相機機身運用內建的安裝狀態修改閃燈韌體。另外，SB-900還可以自動辨識在照相機的取像範圍內連動的配光選擇，
對於可視角之全片幅FX 格式和APS-C 之DX 格式變換可以相互對應切換。而 SB-900在FX模式下的射角是17- 200mm(DX格式時為12- 200mm)。
電源使用AA三號電池4顆。由於升壓電路採用，SB-900也從SB-800那裡繼承了短充電時間功能，SB-900發光部的跳燈角度也擴大至右邊方向，從90到180度都可以轉動了。
同時，在SB-900發光部裡安裝了兩組彩色濾光片，能結合在一起使用。安裝彩色濾光片時，SB-900的發光部可讀取資料，自動送往照相機分配合適的色溫訊息。SB-900主體尺寸約 78X 118.5X 146mm (寬X深X高) 、重量是約415g (除去電池) 。Nikon尼康預計25號發售。
